Day 4, Jazz Fest 2008, 5/1/2008

This area is a benefit of membership. Donations to WWOZ radio provides for seven days of unlimited entry and exit to the festival. This area has refreshments, fruit, clean restrooms, internet access, radio broadcasts, artist interactions, and a general opportunity to relax and return to the festival in a refreshed state. This is an opportunity for individuals that really love New Orleans music and non-commercial radio to promote the cause. This is a wonderful benefit and we really enjoy the opportunity to do so.

Great pix of Jazz Fest! We got rained on pretty hard the first weekend. We stuck around town long enough to see Sonnny Landreth at the Rock 'n' Bowl and the Ponderosa Stomp, which was a blast. Based on your interests, allow me to recommend The World That Made New Orleans: From Spanish Silver To Congo Square, by Ned Sublette. My review of it is here:

I'll add you to my blog roll. You really should read Sublette's book: It is right up your alley. Among many other things, it explains how the Haitian revolution impacted New Orleans (considerably, as it turns out) and show how the all-important Spanish occupation of 40 years was instrumental in creating a New Orleans culture that wound up influencing American culture overall. Reading it inspired me to go back to NOLA for the first time in ten years, and I already can't wait go back.
