The Graveyard: Jazz Fest 2009

Mahalia Jackson was one of the early performers at the first festival held in Congo Square. She gained her elevated position in Gospel music many years ago. Her picture is also mounted inside the Gospel tent of that inaugural performance many years ago in Congo Square. Norm Dixon was a famous New Orleans second liner. Those type performances are seen daily inside the festival grounds. The dancers step in animated syncopation to the various rhythms of the city. The costumes they wear are very brilliant in color with silk sachets and lovely plumes.
